Best Candidates for Oral Sedation
In general, oral-conscious sedation can help both adults and children who suffer from anxieties or fears about going to the dentist. Prior to giving you a prescription for an oral-conscious medication, your dentist will perform a comprehensive evaluation to make sure that you're a good candidate. Your dentist will review your current medication, medical history, and any other issues to make sure oral-conscious sedation is safe for you as well as the type and dose of medication that is appropriate. Oral-conscious sedation may not be performed if you have breathing or heart problems, you are or may be pregnant, or you have had a reaction to benzodiazepines in the past.
What to Expect with Oral Sedation
There are several types of oral-conscious sedation medications that can be used. The type that is prescribed by your board-certified MINT dentistry professional will be based on your anxiety level, your overall health, the procedure you are getting, and how long your appointment will last. Your medication prescription will be written at your consultation and you should have it filled at a pharmacy before your appointment. Since you need to take the medication before you get to our office, you need to have a friend or family member drive you. If you are under light sedation, you will feel relaxed but alert. If you are under moderate sedation, you will still be awake, but you may think you were asleep because you may not remember what happened. You might fall asleep but you will be easy to wake up. Your team will make sure you are safe and comfortable during your visit.
Oral Sedation Treatment Aftercare
Recovery from oral-conscious sedation will vary based on the medication you were prescribed. You will need to have a friend or family member drive you home from our office and watch you for a few hours. Your dentist will warn you about potential side effects of your oral-conscious sedation medication. The most common side effects are temporary dizziness, headaches, vomiting, or nausea. Your risk of vomiting and nausea can be improved by taking the medication after a light meal and then eating a snack when you get home. If you're worried about side effects, please contact our office for further instructions.
The MINT Commitment
For patients who are using dental insurance, our front office will speak to your provider to clarify your coverage for sedation using oral-conscious medication. Then we can calculate your personal responsibility. For patients who do not have insurance, your team will tell you which methods of payment are taken by our practice and we can give you information on low-interest financing to make it easier to afford your sedation and dental care. If you need help affording the dental care that you need or want, ask your dentist for more information on the MINT Discount Plan. We look forward to exceeding your expectations.
